CD Review: Groove Armada- Black Light
Grade: C+
Picture this movie: The film fades in to a massive orgy. Everyone is banging. Then, out of nowhere, a ninja flies into the room and stabs seven people to death before the hero of the movie, who also happens to be at the orgy, breaks the ninja's neck with his bare hands. Scenes like this happen for another two hours, but with little exposition or dialogue. As a whole, it's not a very good movie, but Jesus Christ the individual moments are awesome.
Groove Armada's latest release, Black Light, is a lot like the aforementioned movie. As a whole the CD doesn't make a whole lot of sense. A few tracks with low bass and a female voice will woo the listener into a daze, then out of nowhere the next song will immediately transition into a guitar-driven rock song with David Boiwe-esque vocals. It's a jarring experience, and it really throws the listener out of the musical experience.
That said, so many of the album's songs are good that it's hard to fault the guys in Groove Armada for not hammering out the transitions. For example, the most egregious transition on the album happens between "Warsaw" and "Shameless." The songs are totally different. They're also totally badass. Both songs, for entirely different reasons, could carry their weight on a party mix, but on that party mix they'd transition better than they do on Black Light.
Now if you're the kind of person that skips around willy-nilly, then Black Light may be right up your alley. It's good, enjoyable electronic music that doesn't require a whole lot of ecstasy to enjoy. Though that ecstasy might lead to the aforementioned orgy, which would lead to ninjas. Think about it.
Sounds Like: That drunk kid who changes the song every 30 seconds.
