CD Review: You Say Party! We Say Die!- XXXX
Grade: B
Random punctuation in an already-overdramatic band name? Check.
Female lead singer for a rock group? Check.
Canadian? Check.
On the surface British Columbia's You Say Party! We Say Die! seems like it's going to be a downright awful band. Think about the recipe: One part Panic! At the Disco, one part Paramore and one part Nickelback, simmered together over a long, cold winter and served in a baby seal skull. God, just thinking about it makes us want to vomit.
Thankfully their album XXXX doesn't suck.
Luckily, for both the listener and the band, You Say Party! We Say Die! avoids all the aforementioned pitfalls. Despite the crappy name, the band doesn't take itself too seriously. The lead singer, Becky Ninkovic, stays away from bitchy, too-catchy vocals that make songs entirely too over-the-top to be entertaining. Finally, the band isn't Nickelback, and that's always a good thing.
In fact, it's safe to say that YSPWSD is the opposite of every stereotype that, on the surface, would pertain to them. The band is fun and funky, the chick lead vocalist doesn't bitch in her lyrics, she sings, and they are not (and we double-checked this to make sure it's true) Nickelback. "Glory," "Dark Days" and "Heart of Gold" all twirl around a central musical idea, but are different enough to not be repetitive, while other tracks on the album still let the listener plow through them without feeling anything they hear is too much like the previous song, or too different to the point of being out of place.
In the end we're happy YSPWSD doesn't fit whatever mold we expected it to. Hell, maybe there is hope for the Great White North after all. That's what I'm talkin' aboot, eh?
Sounds Like: Death From Above 1979 with sexy lady influences.
Dowload: It all. Stealing is legal in Canada, right?
Listen to it When: Those oddly attractive girls walk into your party.
