The 5 Key Moments From Ole Miss Baseball This Year
The Ole Miss baseball season had a lot riding on it before it even began. The Rebels seemed to have a lot of hype coming off a pretty good season and the number one recruiting class in the nation. So let’s recap some of the best highs and lows from the season.
5.) A Young Team:
The Rebs are young, that’s for sure. The roster includes fifteen freshmen. Let’s not forget the three transfers as well. Not saying they can’t compete, but it does explain why they aren’t doing too hot in SEC play. Losing some key players from last year’s squad doesn’t help with all the experience they had. Anyways, this is where the Rebels are and here is how the year has played out.
4.) Early Sweeps:
As always, the beginning of the season starts out with a strong nonconference opponent. This year it began with a sweep over the number ten team. Granted, that team is barely making it to the end of the year, but it was a good start to the season. The next weekend brought them another sweep. This time over UNC Wilmington, at the time they were the number twenty-three team. Everyone was fired up at this point. An 8-0 start sounded so good.
3.) All Good Things Come to An End:
The undefeated start only lasted seven games. They lost a midweek game to Memphis… Even Grae went yard! He’s on this team for his glove and yet no one else could pull it together with allowing nine runs. That would start the downs for this season for sure. The next task at hand was Texas. They had to play three good ball clubs in Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU all in one weekend. Needless to say the record dropped to 7-4. Over the next seven games the bullpen came alive. Shutting-out the opponents in six of those games. The bats were still shot dead in Texas because in five of those games we scored two or less runs. SEC play had begun and we took the series against Vandy but of course fell to Memphis right after. Then played three solid games against Kentucky but only to come home with one win.
2.) Some Solid Wins For Ole Miss:
State tried to put our season to an end by sweeping us at home but their closer has just been lights out this season. One of the ups to this season was sweeping a crappy Alabama team. It’s always good to add to the SEC wins. The next few games we went back and forth from losing a series to LSU, beating two nonconference games and then surprisingly taking the series against Mizzou.
1.) It’s Not Over Till It’s Over:
For the fourth time this year, State got a win over us. It didn’t seem to slow the boys down though. They went right into Arkansas and stole the series from a pretty decent team. After majority of the season being over, the Rebs have found the bats as they beat a team 21-7 in just seven innings. Unfortunately, the game had to be called because Nick Fortes was hitting too many homeruns.
There is still three SEC series left in the season so it is very possible to see some wild stuff happen when they are all ranked.
