Virginia Beats No. 5 Carolina, Tech Still Unranked
In an exciting game Monday night at John Paul Jones Arena, the Hoos took on long-time rival, the UNC Tar Heels and beat the nationally ranked number 3 team, 53-43. Carolina went home with their lowest scoring game in coach Roy Williams’ time at the school (14 years) and an ego bruised almost as badly as Isaiah Wilkins’ face this morning after taking an elbow from the Heels.
The guy whose hair has its own student section, known colloquially as “Kyle,” was the night’s leading scorer with 17 points and boasted six rebounds and four assists, one of his best games yet. The game belonged to Virginia with 12 turnovers and a weak offensive start from Carolina, ending with only one Carolina player, Joel Berry II, in the double digits.
Coaches Tony Bennett and Roy Williams were active on the sideline and shared a short exchange at the final buzzer. Fortunately for the floors of JPJ, Roy did not slam a chair to the ground (as he did when UNC played Miami last month) upon the team’s loss to Virginia.
Speaking of coaches letting the game get the best of them, Buzz Williams’ team took on Miami Monday night as well, and actually won. In a close 66-61 victory the Hokies rocked Cassel Coliseum and took down number 25 Miami. We would like to report on Virginia Tech’s rank, but the AP tops out the list at 25, leaving the school unranked.
