What the Lyrics of Western’s Fight Song Should Really Be

author-pic at Western Michigan University

Now that it’s football season, hearing Western’s fight song yelled out at games and tailgates is almost as common as seeing beers being bonged there. Almost. While the fight song can hype up a crowd or motivate a comeback on the football field, it may not be the most accurate representation of the WMU Broncos. To fix that, we’ve created a more accurate fight song for you to sing:

Drink on, drink on for Western;
Take a shot, make a toast, drinking games!

instead of

Fight on, fight on for Western;
Take the ball, make a score, win the game!

We all know the real reason that Broncos are so hyped up for games. Let’s all acknowledge that the real fight we’re in is against sobriety on Saturdays, by any means necessary.

Onward for the blasted and beer;
Put ‘em down, tilt ‘em back ‘til the game!

instead of

Onward for the Brown and Gold;
Push ‘em back, push ‘em back, bring us fame!

A WMU football game is basically just a tailgate after-party. So the game most Broncos are playing in is called “drink as much as possible until the game starts.” If you can walk onward into the game without stumbling, you lose.

Drink on, drink on for Western;
Not just one, chug it all, feel no pain.

instead of

Fight on, fight on for Western;
Over one, over all, we will reign.

When the drunken walk from the tailgate to Waldo field starts, there is a strict no-alcohol-left-behind policy. There’s not a Bronco at the game that didn’t suffer through the last of their liquor to avoid throwing it out, so everyone there knows your struggle.

Broncos party right?
From tailgate til night.
It’s more important than the game!

instead of

Fight, Broncos fight!
Fight with all your might.
Western win this game!

The phrase “win or lose, we still booze” is always prevalent at Western, even after the 2016 season. The game is the reason we’re out, but Broncos know the score isn’t important.

When you find yourself walking into Waldo stadium this weekend, you should be singing the fight song the way it was meant to be sung. About a fight we will always win.
