Bartender of the Week: Tavola’s Raymond Forthuber

Name: Raymond Forthuber

Bar: Tavola

Relationship Status: Taken — like a shot of good bourbon

Major: English Lit (duh)

Favorite Drink: Negroni

Favorite Shot: Ramazzotti

Disgusting Drink: Iced tea, I just don’t get it.

Why should people come to Tavola as soon as they’re done with their last final?:

Tavola is in the Belmont neighborhood, and as such is a great way to totally escape everything UVA and lose yourself in one of the best cocktails you’ve ever had.

As a bartender, what do you study most?:

People, without a doubt. I get a charge out of setting a drink down in front of a customer with a wink and a nod, and it’s the exact drink they didn’t know they wanted.

What is something you’re ashamed to admit you’d get in A+ in?:

I have no shame, and as such would NOT be ashamed to admit that I would get an A+ in a class on the movie Moulin Rouge directed by Baz Luhrmann.

What’s the longest period of time you’ve been awake without sleep? Why?:

42 hours while traveling through Japan, because jet lag, and because you can buy beer from a convenience store 24/7, then open it in the store and walk out sipping your suds.

Give freshmen taking college finals for the first time a bit of advice:

Seriously, sleep is important.

What’s something you hope is different when students come back to UVa in spring 2016?:

By spring of 2016 I hope that Virginia has totally overhauled their alcohol laws and of-age students can stroll along the Downtown Mall taking in the budding trees and gorgeous Virginia springtime while sipping a beer or glass of wine…hey, it never hurts to dream, right?

What will 2016 be the year of?:

2016 will be the year Apple unveils the iDrone, with a selection of posh colors to match any ensemble.  Will YOU be ready?

Why should people read The Black Sheep?:

Read The Black Sheep because reading enriches your life.  Read The Black Sheep because you’re pooping and you forgot your phone in the other room.  Read The Black Sheep because real people work hard and spend their time to produce it from nothing.  Or don’t read it, I mean, this is America, read what you want.
