Maryland’s State Song Rewritten to be Much More Accurate

Recently Maryland’s state song came under fire for being no-so-subtly racist, so the University of Maryland’s school of music decided to start a competition to rewrite the lyrics. The Black Sheep is sure that most entries will be from from people who never actually read the words of the original version, so we decided to help you all out and explain what’s really going on in this wonderful state song. What could go wrong when the writer was an avid Confederate supporter?

Jokes, and memes, and fearless teens
Maryland, my Maryland
Forever will we laugh at thee
Maryland, my Maryland

Distract us so we cannot see
How racist our song used to be
And what that possibly could mean
Maryland, my Maryland

Heads up, all, it’s not just the flag
Maryland, my Maryland
That holds a secret, racist tag
Maryland, my Maryland

Now our song, too, we get to drag
As it’s full of awful brags
Of “wins” against the North, scumbag
Maryland, my Maryland

Not gonna lie, this seems absurd

Maryland, my Maryland

How have we not yet changed the words?

Maryland, my Maryland

There’s no way they could be misheard
No reason for us to infer
This shit’s offensive, all you turds
Maryland, my Maryland.
