The Oscars have come under a lot of fire in recent years for their clear, obvious bias towards white actors. During the 2015 and 2016 Oscars, not a single actor of color was nominated for an award. Fortunately, that has changed with this year’s award show.
Thanks to grassroots pressure from people outside the Academy, the Oscars have finally begun to include a single token black person in each category, allowing them to appease their audiences while still maintaining their own racial biases. Even though there are still no other racial minorities included in the Academy Awards, such as Asian Americans or Latinos, this is an enourmous diversity victory.
Almost every award has nominated one or even TWO black people, who probably won’t win anything and are only there to keep the audience quiet. Denzel Washington was nominated for best leading actor for his performance in Fences. Ruth Negga for best leading actress in Loving. Progressive! Never mind that every single other person in those categories is as white as incest snow.
Even though there are still absolutely zero Latino Americans or Asian Americans nominated for an acting award, the Oscars are truly proving to the American public how committed they are to our national values of diversity and inclusion. Racism is dead!
But don’t worry, conservatives. Even though the Academy is clearly listening to the American people and doing the bare minimum to prove they aren’t racist, they’re holding true to some of their original values. Many of the less well-known categories, such as costume design and sound editing, still are based around heavily white-centered films.
It’s clear that the Oscars are working hard to change for the better. They’ve shown a clear devotion to diversity by including a single minority in some categories. That’s the kind of progress that proves that this country is changing for the better.
