With the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, and the impending student elections, it’s safe to say that the political heat wave has gripped the University of South Carolina. Of the many candidates who have announced they are running, one certainly stands out from the rest. Eric Donaldson, a junior economics major, has taken it upon himself to “Make the South Rise Again.”
Though the elections aren’t until February, Donaldson seems to be somewhat of a dark horse as he has somewhat of a sizeable following. The Black Sheep spoke with Chelsea Stevens, a sophomore finance major and asked the question no one else dared— why the love for Donaldson? “He just tells it like it is and doesn’t hold back. Plus, he’s different than the usual political science majors who always run, he’s someone who can relate to people like me.”
Another supporter, Will Phillips, a senior international business major, gave this reason for voting for Donaldson; “He’s just a different kind of candidate, which is what we need. I mean we really haven’t seen so much change with our current president, I mean how hard can it be to be student body president?”
Though he has amassed a large following, there are those who are not thrilled about Eric Donaldson’s campaign for student body president. Philip Kessel, a senior studio art major, expressed his distaste for Donaldson to The Black Sheep, “He’s an idiot, he just goes around running his mouth and making promises that he knows that he can’t keep. He will fail, just watch him. The presidential candidate has made some incredibly huge promises if he is elected the student body president. Donaldson has promised to build a wall around the Horseshoe to keep out Columbia’s homeless, make the school week only two weeks long, ban any sort of ‘odd’ hairstyles and accessories, and make football opening day a school holiday.”
Mr. Donaldson certainly has a long road of him and many obstacles to overcome, The Black Sheep will continue to report as we near the election date.
